My Top 10 Favorite Things About Being a Consultant

by Savannah Moore, Gamma Mu – Missouri State University and 2018-2019 Leadership Consultant

While traveling from university to university, I often get asked the question, “Why did you apply to be a Leadership Consultant?” As I sat down to write this list, I realized that it would not take much time to list the things I love about being a Leadership Consultant (LC). Here is what I came up with as my top favorites:

The People

First on the list, and for good reason, are the people.  I’ve had the opportunity to meet the most wonderful people this year. It’s exhilarating to see the connections that can be made in such a little amount of time. I’m constantly amazed by the women leading our chapters. They are brave, confident, compassionate, genuine, and remind me daily what a leader is. I’m so fortunate to have built strong relationship bonds with people whom, without being a consultant, I most likely would have never have crossed paths with.

Opportunities to Travel & Explore

Chances are, if you’ve dreamed of applying to be an LC, you’ve also secretly aspired to travel the U.S. and Canada. I’m going to be real with you… it IS every bit as cool as you might have thought! I find myself calling my mom every other week saying, “I feel like I’m absolutely having the time of my life.” It is an unparalleled opportunity to travel and explore. A great perk of being a consultant is that the chapters usually want to show you their favorite restaurants and places to explore. So, it really is one of the best ways to experience the uniqueness of the different parts of America and Canada.

Learning Myself Better

I am an extrovert; an ENFJ (extraversion, intuition, feeling, judging) according to the Meyers Briggs Personality Test. However, the more I travel and spend time alone, I find that being alone has helped me realize more of what makes me, me. I’m learning what I need to “recharge,” and most of the time that means being alone for a bit. It’s a beautiful thing – “learning who you are.”

Sisterhood Across the Country

I truly enjoy seeing how chapters operate. With different parts of the country, comes different norms, and ultimately different types of Panhellenic cultures. But, I always get emotional when it comes to the sisterhood component. No matter how different the culture of one campus is from the other, ADPi sisterhood remains constant and is what ties us all together.

International officers & Alumnae Volunteers

I always share, I first fell in love with my home chapter, then I fell in love with the international organization. l developed a deep respect and appreciation for the women who have devoted decades (yes, decades) of their lives to ADPi. When I read the portion of our creed that states, “I believe that my sorority is more than a ritual or a symbol, that it is a way of life,” my mind flashes over the hundreds of volunteers who miss family events, answer calls at 3 a.m., spend 5 hours in countless Sunday meetings, and fly hundreds of miles year after year to ensure our members have the best experience possible. Now that’s what it means to live for each other.

The Food

Ahh… arguably the best reason on the list. You essentially get to try foods from all over the country and from some of the very best places to boot. To give you an example, in one week I went from eating In-N-Out near the beach in California to Fresh Seafood in Newport, Rhode Island. Best. Job. Ever.

Perks of the Job

Just in case you were wondering and didn’t know, LC’s do receive a salary. And the majority of expenses are covered while you’re traveling, so if you are looking to save or like me, start a Roth IRA, this is a really great opportunity. Plus the airline miles we collect over the year, we get to keep!

Lifetime Connections

We have some pretty incredible alumnae here in Alpha Delta Pi. While being a member opens many doors, being a sister of the suitcase opens even more! Being an LC brings a network of sisters who understand each other on a whole other level – and are willing to vouch for you because they know exactly what it’s like to be an LC.

A Deeper Commitment to Alpha Delta Pi

Personally, I find as I spend more time understanding our creed, sisterhood, and policies, I find I associate more and more with our values and the organization as a whole. The principles and values have become a part of me.

My Fellow LC Sisters

These gals have become my counselors, my co-workers, my best pals… my people. I couldn’t quite wrap my head around how Leadership Consultants bonded so greatly, when they spend so much time apart. I think it must start with the inner character similarities we all share to begin with.  We all love ADPi, we all seek to be leaders, and are crazy enough to live out of a suitcase for an entire year! Knowing at the end of the day, my LC Sisters are experiencing the same thing as me is both what comforts us and connects us.

Thank you, Alpha Delta Pi, for one of the best years of my life and for the memories I’ll cherish forever.

Love and Loyally,
