Stop the Hazing

Max Gruver Foundation | Alpha Delta Pi | Sigma Chi

In 2017, Alpha Delta Pi sister Rae Ann Gruver and her husband Steve lost their son to a hazing incident at Louisiana State University. Since Max’s death, Steve and Rae Ann have traveled across the country sharing Max’s story, and in fall of 2018, Alpha Delta Pi partnered with the Max Gruver Foundation to help spread awareness of the dangers of hazing. This year, Alpha Delta Pi, Sigma Chi, and the Max Gruver Foundation with support from the Alpha Delta Pi Foundation will once again partner for our annual Stop the Hazing campaign.

During National Hazing Prevention Week, September 21-25, Alpha Delta Pi and Sigma Chi collegiate chapters will virtually share Max’s story and spread awareness on their college campuses.

As you plan how you want to virtually raise awareness, use the Ways to Be Involved with the 2020 Campaign resource to identify strategies to raise awareness, provide education, and cultivate ongoing conversation around hazing.

There are two educational opportunities to engage with this campaign.

  • Sunday, September 20th at 7:00 p.m. EST:  Love, Mom and Dad: Turning Tragedy Into Progress
    • Presented by the Anti-Hazing Coalition, this program features families who have lost their sons to fraternity hazing, including Steve and Rae Ann Gruver. These families each suffered unimaginable loss as a result of fraternity hazing. They will share their stories and challenge ALL fraternity/sorority members to take up the fight to end hazing now.
  • Tuesday, September 15th at 7:00 p.m. EST: Talk About It Tuesday – A Conversation on How to Stop the Hazing
    • Talk About It Tuesday is a series from Alpha Delta Pi that provides for space for sisters to learn about and discuss topics that can be challenging to talk about, but are key in continuing to creating a meaningful experience. The conversation around hazing will focus on the impact of unhealthy cultures and how to address systemic issues that allow for this behavior to happen. It will include space to talk about building healthier sisterhoods, identifying issues, and actionable steps sisters can take.

Additional education, engagement opportunities and a virtual pledge card will be available through Alpha Delta Pi’s social media channels and Chronicle communications.

Electronic copies of post cards and pledge cards from previous campaign years are also available:

Together with the Gruvers, Alpha Delta Pi and Sigma Chi collegians and alumnae can #StoptheHazing culture in our society. We thank the Alpha Delta Pi Foundation and the Max Gruver Foundation for their continued support of this campaign.
