A Society for Mutual Improvement
A Letter from Eugenia Tucker Fitzgerald
“When I entered the junior class in Wesleyan Female College in 1851, it was with the desire to win the first honor. I found that the girls who most attracted and won my regard—though the daughters of two prominent bishops of the Methodist church— were the leaders in all frolics and mischievous devices for annoying and outwitting professors. I talked to them and to other girls, asking if they would help me form a society for mutual improvement and enjoyment.
Fifteen girls came to my room, bringing their own seats, looking curious and wondering what we could do. I had gone to the president and professors and told them of our wishes and intentions. This was gravely considered as it was the first effort of the kind in a female college, but consent was given, and Professor Myers helped me to write the constitution and bylaws. The name, motto, and badge were voted upon, and soon appeared this band wearing white satin ribbons bearing the name Adelphean and the motto We live for each other.”
